April 14th, the Florida Crappie Club held an event in Astor, FL, right on the St. Johns River. Eligible water was Lake George all the way to the bridge in Deland, including Lake Dexter and Woodruff. A lot of good anglers competing in this event, including our very own Alan Jacobson and his partner Will Lucas, of Doghouse Jigs.
Just over 20 boats hit the water that morning, all with the intention of bringing in 7 fish to the scales for that 1st place prize. A crisp 57 degrees as they left out for their day, Jake and Will had a plan to fish the main river before the recreational boat traffic picked up, and then set out to hit Dexter, hitting some pads along the way.
Their plan panned out and it was good enough to get them a 6th place finish in a field of 23 boats, with about a 9lb finish in 7 fish. Mitch McGill and his partner, Russ Regal, managed to lock in a 2nd place finish with just over an 11lb total for their seven!
For the most part, the 10' and 12' Vexan Crappie Rods did most of the damage for these guys, as well as quite a few pulled to the boat with the 6'6" Ultra Light Vexan Crappie Rod!
